"ITER and fusion diagnostics development" research group consists mainly of engineers. The main field of activities of the research group, is to participate in the development of the ITER experimental fusion power plant in three main areas.
Tritium is indispensable for fusion, but only negligible amount is present in the nature. Therefore, the inner wall of the future energy producing reactors will be covered by tritium producing shield containing lithium, that absorbs neutrons - produced by fusion process- and converts into tritium. Test Blanket Module (TBM) will be located in three dedicated ports and each port will house two different type of concept of tritium breeding. The group participate in the development and integration of ancillary sub-systems of TBM, such as helium cooling circuit, lithium circulating, tritium extraction and transport located in port cell area. Moreover, blanket sensor and instrumentation development and maintenance studies are also part of their activities.
Goal of Tokamak Services for Diagnostics (TSD) is to transmit signals of in-vessel diagnostics from vacuum vessel to the outer world. Signals are coming from diagnostics, that are either responsible for safe operation of ITER or measurement of plasma physical characteristics (eg. heat, radiation) or monitoring and control of magnetic field. In total around 8800 components, dozens of km cable need to be correctly placed on the vacuum vessel wall, that is capable of reliably delivering measurement data outside the chamber. The group plays a significant role in this activity as consortium leader.
The research group is also involved as consortium partner for the development of the so-called bolometer cameras. A total of 480 bolometer detector monitors the plasma, which is an important part of the ITER plasma real time control.
Although the group primarily participate in the development of ITER, engineers contribute to the development of a number of other diagnostic systems, like fast camera viewing system installed on Wendelstein 7X stellarator in Germany, lithium beam emission spectroscopy installed on EAST in China and on KSTAR in Korea.
